Before you go

Good to know.

Passport and visas

Passport valid 6 months past travel, with two blank pages. Japan needs no visa for short tourist stays. China requires a visa, so apply 2 to 3 weeks ahead: apply for the China visa here.

Getting there

International flights are not included. Arrive at Tokyo Haneda (HND) by Sep 1, and email Ronnie your flight info for airport pickup. The return flies out of Shanghai Pudong (PVG). Leaving from LA, Chicago, or New York is sometimes cheaper.

Money

Japan uses yen, about 158 to the dollar. China uses yuan, about 6.7 to the dollar. Check live rates on the XE converter. You may carry up to 10,000 USD in cash. Tell your bank you are traveling.

Before you fly

Get travel insurance, make a copy of your passport, send Ronnie your emergency contact, and download WhatsApp for the group chat. Doing the go-karts? Bring an International Driving Permit, 18 and over.

What to pack

Comfy walking shoes, you will log serious steps. A pink and yellow outfit for the birthday celebration and an all-white outfit for our night out. Insect repellent, a power bank, a small daypack, a light rain layer, and modest cover-ups for temples and shrines. A universal power adapter works for both countries.

Handy apps

Download before you go: Google Maps and a translation app, Suica for Tokyo trains and tap-to-pay, Navitime for train times, GO for taxis, Tabelog for restaurants, Klook for activities, and Flush to find restrooms.
